Art Outside the BoxThis week the City begins the installation of jury-reviewed, student-designed graphic art on Caltrans utility boxes located on Orange Avenue between Third Street and Avenida de las Arenas. The boxes are part of a public art program “Art Outside the Box,” designed to celebrate local student artists through the transformation of Caltrans traffic control utility boxes into distinctive works of art. Eight boxes will be installed prior to a dedication on Monday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m., in the Winn Room. The graphic art wraps are applied using the same technique as the City’s portable restroom trailers and acts as a graffiti deterrent. The Cultural Arts Commission initiated the project and costs were partially funded through donations by the Friends of the Library, the Coronado Rotary Club and Carol Pastor and Family. For more information on this project, contact the Contract Arts Administrator Kelly Purvis, at (619) 522-2633, [email protected], or visitwww.CoronadoARTS.com.

Coronado Beaches are Open As of Wednesday, March 14, both Coronado and Silver Strand State Beach are open.   On Monday, March 12, the San Diego County Environmental Health Department issued a brief closure of Coronado Beach.  On Wednesday, the closure was lifted for both Coronado Beach and Silver Strand State Beach.   A Beach Advisory, however, remains in effect.  The Environmental Health Department issues a General Rain Advisory for all coastal waters in San Diego County to avoid contact 72-hours after all rain events.

Sunset Park ImprovementsThe contractor completed installation of the irrigation system and conducted a full system coverage test this week. The next task is to install and prepare the sod, which requires an establishment period of about four to six weeks before foot traffic is allowed.  The sod won’t be ready until mid-April due to frost in the region where it is grown, the San Pasqual Valley. Sunset Park is currently closed for public use during construction and a short time thereafter for the new sod to take root. The park is expected to reopen in May.
