  • Spreckels Park Sod ReplacementThe City began its annual sod replacement project in Spreckels Park on Monday, February 26. Public Services’ Parks Division removed around 5,500 square feet of thin, patchy turf on the southeast side of the Gazebo (see aerial map below). The area will remain closed through this week as its prepared for the new sod arriving on Tuesday, March 6. Once the new sod is placed, the area will remain closed-off until the week of April 16, 2018, which is when the annual Flower Show will begin its setup for the April 21 and 22 event. Keeping the area closed ensures the grass is ready for events like the Flower Show and the Summer Concert series.Spreckels
  • Habitat Restoration Continues Along Silver Strand: In December of 2017, the City contacted the Navy to get an update on its Habitat Restoration Project, which had previously required the installation of many protective cones on sensitive habitat areas along the Silver Strand.  The cones were initially installed as protection for new plants whose growth will help restore the habitat for plants and animals, such as the California Least Tern and the Western Snowy Plover.  Many of the cones were recently removed; however, some of the cones have had to remain in place longer than anticipated due to the lack of rain this season, and unfortunately because some of the plants could not survive and were replanted.  The cones that are still in place will be there through late 2018.
  • Upcoming Event – SuperSEAL TriathlonThe 12th annual SuperSEAL and SEAL Sprint race events will be held on Sunday, March 18, along State Route 75 (SR 75). Event organizers expect around 1,000 participants. Both swim-bike-run events cover a course along the Silver Strand. Beginning at approximately 6:30 a.m. until about 1 p.m., a detour will open SR 75 to vehicle traffic in both directions at a reduced speed, and close some lanes until about noon. The Bayshore Bikeway will be impacted as well. The parking lot at Silver Strand State Beach will close at 6:30 a.m. Event organizers have mailed notification letters to those along the route. Proceeds go to the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Optimists Club of Coronado and the Islander Sports Foundation.
