  • Navy Carriers:  The Navy has notified the City that late next week and running through early October, both the USS Carl Vinson and USS Theodore Roosevelt will be in port. Residents can anticipate traffic impacts in the mornings and afternoons.
  • Labor Day Schedule 2017:  The City will observe the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 4. Here’s a list of those City facilities that will be open with varying hours of operation. Public Services crews will not sweep streets on the holiday. EDCO will not perform regular residential trash collection on Labor Day. As a result, service will be delayed one day. Here is the Labor Day schedule:

    Schedule

  • Trespasser/Squatter:  On Wednesday, August 23, Cpl. Brian Wray was contacted by a real estate agent regarding a property on Tolita Avenue. As Wray entered the residence, a man ran out. Officers found the subject a few blocks away. The same man was contacted the previous day for a similar incident. Prosecution was not desired in that incident and a report was completed. In the August 23 incident, prosecution was desired and the man was arrested and released with a written promise to appear for trespassing. Unfortunately, trespassing/squatting is a non-bookable misdemeanor offense which means the law only allows officers to issue a ticket to appear in court. To charge burglary there needs to be intent to commit a theft or any other felony in the structure. In these incidents, the subject’s only intent was to sleep and hang out in the home. This may seem frustrating and frightening but officers can only enforce the law as it is written. If you see someone where they should not be, call 911 immediately.
  • Adaptive Signals Update: The City has made good progress on a project to install adaptive traffic signals along state Route 75 at three intersections, including Tarawa Road. The project should be completed by Labor Day, September 4. Motorist and commuters traveling north along the Silver Strand into the Village may experience delays and are asked to plan accordingly. The project should offer relief when the signals are activated.
  • New City Phones:  The City is currently installing a new telephone system and phones throughout its facilities to ensure important business with residents, businesses and patrons can be efficiently conducted. The current system is more than 12 years old and is reaching the end of its useful life. It is no longer supported by the manufacturer and no software updates are available. The phones cannot be replaced as there are no new or refurbished hardware offered by the manufacturer. Calls were being dropped, screens could not be read. The new system will go online in early September.
