Fatal Car Crash in Coronado – Alcohol May Have Been Factor

Video: ABC 10News.com

This morning at 1223 a.m., a Jeep traveling northbound Silver Strand State Hwy drove over the median near Pomona Avenue at a high rate of speed colliding with two vehicles in the southbound lanes.

When first responders arrived on scene they found one person deceased and six others including two children with moderate to severe injuries in a Honda SUV, and one person in a KIA sedan with injuries. The driver of the KIA sedan also had a dog in the car that was uninjured and transported to our Animal Care Facility. The driver and solo occupant of the Jeep was also transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Accident occurred where Silver Strand State Highway (SR 75) intersects Pomona Avenue.  SR 75 passes through the city of Coronado as Orange Avenue and continues onto the San Diego–Coronado Bay Bridge.

The roadway will be shutdown in both directions for several hours. A SigAlert has been issued.

Although the Coronado Police Department is in the early stages of this investigation, it does appear alcohol may be a factor in the collision. If you have any information regarding this incident please call (619) 522-7350.
