  • New Fire Engine: The Fire Department on Wednesday, April 12, welcomed the City’s newest $750,000 Pierce pumper fire engine in a traditional ceremony that involved crews pushing the vehicle back into the station. The tradition goes back to the days of the hand- and horse-drawn fire engines, ladder wagons and hose carts that were pushed back into the station by hand. Even after the use of steam to power the engines, often the steam connections were dismantled and fire fighters had to do the pushing. The tradition lives on as a way to honor old and new fire crews. The new engine will be on display at the April 18 City Council meeting then stationed at the main Fire Station. The new engine replaces the 2010 Pierce that will rotate to the Cays as a reserve engine.
  • Fire Department photosSilver Strand Speed Reduction: Construction is scheduled to commence soon on a new signalized intersection at the Hooper Boulevard entrance to the Coronado Coastal Campus project. During construction, speed limits along state Route 75 will be temporarily reduced to 55 mph (from 65 mph) from Coronado Cays Boulevard to Rainbow Drive. The new speed will be in effect from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning April 24 and lasting through October 2018, when the signalized intersection is expected to be completed. Traffic control signs will be used. See signage map below.

  • The City plans to replace all eight fire rings at Coronado’s North Beach. The current rings are nine years old and are battered, some with exposed rebar. On Thursday, April 20, crews will remove and dispose of the current rings. On Friday, April 21, the new fire rings will be installed. There will be no fire rings on Thursday. The Police Department will set up the electronic message board on Thursday morning to let people know.
