National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Time to clean out your medicine cabinets. This Saturday, October 22, from 10am-2pm, bring your unneeded prescription drugs to the Coronado Police Department for disposal.

prescription-drug-take-backThese events are designed to prevent the abuse and theft of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs by removing the drugs from homes. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Be part of the initiative to stop prescription drug abuse.

Last April, Americans turned in 447 tons (over 893,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,400 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,200 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 11 previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 6.4 million pounds—about 3,200 tons—of pills.

Did you know that medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, or even accidental poisoning? Also, did you know that flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards?

If you can’t make it this Saturday, don’t forget that the Coronado Police Department has a collection box in the PD lobby available during regular business hours.
