DJ Jackson controls the opening tip off to Myles Manning

The Islanders boys varsity basketball team saved one of their best performances for last as they played host to the Clairemont Chieftains Friday night. Caden Gentry opened the game by sinking back to back 10 foot jumpers and had a steal as Coronado opened in a full court press. Bruen Roulier hit two free throws and converted a Clairemont turnover into a fast break lay-up. A minute later, Myles Manning drained a 12 foot jumper followed by DJ Jackson’s low post score.  Manning kept up the Islander dominance with a nice drive in traffic to make the score 18-5 at the end of the first quarter.

DJ Jackson started the second quarter with a strong offensive rebound and put back.  But just when Coronado could smell a blow-out, the Chieftains hit a couple of 3 pointers and went on a 9-0 run to make it a game again at 20-14.  Myles Manning and Scott Hendricks got Coronado back on track by hitting clutch 3 pointers.  Later Luis Cruz snatched an offensive rebound then took the ball strong to the hoop for 2.  The Islanders led at halftime 35-26.

Caden Gentry started the second half much like the first with a steal and lay-in. Soon after, DJ Jackson was fouled making an inside jump hook and converted the free throw.  But again, when the game seemed to be getting out of reach, Clairemont sank three 3 pointers in row to make it a 5 point contest at 39-34.  Coronado kept the defensive pressure on with Gentry getting his 3rd and 4th steals which were converted into fast break points. The strong play of Myles Manning, Gentry and the inside presence of DJ Jackson allowed the Islanders to pull away by the end of 3 quarters.  Coronado kept rolling in the fourth period with many transition baskets.  Final score Islanders 82, Clairemont 64.

DJ Jackson led all scorers with 29 points and 18 rebounds.  Myles Manning had 22 points and 6 rebonds.  Caden Gentry had 11 points and 4 steals and Bruen Roulier chipped in 8 points.
