Around 3 p.m. this afternoon, a 15 yr old girl was walking home from school when she noticed a black Ford Mustang following her in the area of 7th Street and A Ave. The vehicle pulled up a few feet in front of her and stopped near the side of the road. The girl was able to look inside the car and see the driver. The vehicle then sped off and she lost sight of it.
The vehicle showed up a few blocks later, and once again, pulled over in front of her until she walked passed. The vehicle then followed her down Margarita Ave., and then pulled in front of her for a third time. The girl did not acknowledge the driver and continued to walk home. She is unsure if the vehicle followed her. The driver never made contact with the girl or rolled down his windows.
The vehicle was a new, boxy style, black Ford Mustang with tinted windows. The girl describes the driver as a Hispanic male, in his 30’s, wearing sunglasses. He had a large nose and little to no hair, possibly bald.
We are encouraging parents to take a few moments to talk to their children about how to stay safe when walking alone. Here are a few tips:
- If your child feels unsafe at anytime on their walk, have them use their cell phone to call police
- If someone is following your child in a car, instruct them to turn around and go in the opposite direction
- Arrange for your child to walk with another child, safety in numbers!
- Identify safe houses along the route home. Point out homes of family friends or businesses where the child might stop for help
- Brief your child on how to respond to strangers who they might encounter.
If you have any information regarding this suspicious incident, or would like to speak to a police officer about child safety, please call us at (619) 522-7350.
