Community Voices: Coronado Bike Safety Group

Coronado’s terrain, weather and size make it ideal for bicycles as a mode of transportation. The Coronado Bike Safety Group (CBSG) has recently formed to promote greater, safer use of bikes on our Island. The group will partner with Coronado business, civic, schools, City government, community action groups, and social organizations to raise awareness of bike riding benefits, safety issues and solutions. While a top goal is to increase bike ridership by Coronado residents, a major focus is to increase bike safety for all ages, on all our streets, 24-7. A related goal is to educate bike riders regarding state and local safety ordnances, rules of the road and local street improvements that impact bike riding. Social media, written media/newsletters, local TV, videos and other public means will be used to get out the message.

You may have already noticed bike safety improvements on Glorietta Blvd and Sixth Street. In the future you will see “Sharrows” or shared lane bicycle marking. This pavement marking includes a bicycle symbol and two white chevrons ( ). It is used to remind motorists that bicycles are permitted to use the full lane. Perhaps you also have heard about the new law referred to as the “Three Feet for Safety Act” which becomes effective September 16, 2015. The law requires cars to keep at least three feet from bicycles when passing. In the interim, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has published an informative document entitled “Sharing the Road (FFDL 37): Safety Tips for Bicyclists and Motorists” which explains laws and safety tips for safe bike riding. You can find this document at this link: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmyHYPERLINK “https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffdl37″&HYPERLINK “https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffdl37″urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffdl37

Be on the lookout for more bike-related information from CBSG in the future.
