Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.
New Water Restrictions
Beginning June 1, California American Water implemented a new California Public Utilities Commission-approved watering schedule for its customers in response to the drought. The City was recently notified of this change and has placed this schedule on its website. Any questions, concerns or violations should be reported to California American Water. Visit the company’s contact page for more information. Coronado has requested that California American Water hold a meeting in Coronado answer customer questions and discuss how the community can achieve conservation targets. As soon as a date has been set, the City will let the community know. Here is the new watering schedule for customers residing in Coronado, Imperial Beach and South San Diego:
- Odd-numbered addresses: Sunday and Thursday
- Even-numbered addresses: Saturday and Tuesday
- Apartments, Businesses and Condos are allowed to water Monday and Friday
- Watering is limited to two days a week
- No watering from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No watering for more than 15 minutes per station.
Report City Leaks
Coronado has about 8,000 irrigation heads and 20 miles of main irrigation and lateral lines running through its parks, facility landscaping, medians and other landscaped areas. The City asks for the community’s help in reporting broken sprinkler heads or leaks on public property by visiting this page on the City’s Action Center. If the matter is urgent, such as a spouting sprinkler head, please call Public Services at (619) 522-7380. When reporting a problem please be as specific as possible so staff can find it fast. It is difficult to diagnose a broken sprinkler head if given an unspecific location, such as at “Cays Park.” The City will respond as soon as it possibly can. Find out more about reporting leaks or water waste on private property through California American Water by clicking here.
More Attention for Orange Avenue
Along with the City’s top-rated beach and quaint neighborhoods, Orange Avenue helps define Coronado for visitors and residents. It is vitally important that this major business corridor is at all times beautiful, well-kept and clean. During the busy summer months when Coronado’s population swells with vacationers and those coming home for the summer, Orange is ground zero for people as they run errands, shop or have a meal in town. Because the City takes pride in caring for its gardens and public open spaces, its streets and sidewalks, beginning last week, City crews implemented a supplemental sidewalk cleaning schedule for the City’s Business District, between Eighth Street and R.H. Dana Place, along both sides of Orange. City workers patrol the sidewalks, removing litter, cleaning small spills and droppings and emptying trash cans that are near full. This extra work will initially be performed Thursday through Sunday, as well as holidays, from a few hours during the late afternoon into the early evening. The public should notice a tidier Orange Avenue for their evening outings. The level of effort and frequency of these extra services will vary with the number of visitors. It is possible the City will increase the extra effort to daily during the peak of the tourist season. The City strives to improve the Coronado experience for residents and visitors. If you like what you see or see areas where things can be improved, please contact us at (619) 522-7335.
Gateway Design Concepts
Cast your vote, Coronado. Your input is requested. Six alternative design concepts to transform the existing State Route 75 tollbooth plaza into the Coronado Gateway were presented at a June 4 community workshop. If you would like to have a say in the design of this important gateway entrance, visit the project’s website at coronadogateway.com to review the alternatives and take the quick survey. Based on feedback from the community, the preferred alternative will be further refined.
Wayfinding Signage Program
At its Tuesday, June 16, meeting, the City Council will consider moving forward with the Wayfinding Signage Program to improve vehicle, pedestrian and bicyclist signage. The wayfinding program is intended to improve the flow of traffic through better navigation; identify points of interest, and their true proximity; lessen vehicle usage; promote guest safety and an improved overall visitor experience; and reduce the number of lost visitors traveling in residential neighborhoods. A total of 47 new vehicle, pedestrian and bicycle signs are proposed, with 19 existing signs being eliminated. Since January, three mock-up signs have been installed at Alameda Boulevard near Country Club Lane; Strand Way near the pocket park off Pomona Avenue; and along the bikeway near the Community Center. The full Coronado Wayfinding Program can be found online here.
Street, Curb and Gutter Project
The contractor has been authorized to mobilize and begin construction on the latest Street, Curb and Gutter Project on Monday, June 15. The project will include street improvements in the following locations:
- D Avenue First to Tenth streets
- Third Street Glorietta Place to Pomona Avenue
- Southwest corner of Sixth Street and A Avenue
The project involves replacing sections of damaged pavement and constructing a new finished roadway surface. The project also includes sidewalk, curb and gutter, and pedestrian ramp replacement. The contractor has 30 working days to complete the project. Streets will be closed to through traffic during portions of the work but will be reopened at the end of each working day. During the pavement replacement and rehabilitation phase of the project, the contractor will be grinding the existing surface which will leave a rough but still a drivable surface. Once grinding operations are complete, the contractor will overlay the existing roadway with a new asphalt surface. Residents will receive a notice announcing the construction work on their affected streets via an informational flier delivered by the contractor 72 hours in advance of the work. For the most recent work schedule and status, check the City Manager’s Weekly Update published at noon on Friday at www.coronado.ca.us. Questions can be directed to the Public Services & Engineering Department at (619) 522-7383 or to the contractor at (619) 208-2401.
