CHS students, community partners recieve Technical Education and Occupational Program Awards

The 2014-2015 Coronado High School Career Technical Education/Regional Occupational Program Awards were held at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Theatre. The event was held on May 5th, 2015, with the CoSA Jazz Ensemble providing entertainment. Former Coronado High School ROP student Alina Fuentes served as keynote speaker.

Coronado High School Career Technical Education (CTE) programs prepare students to identify and respond to 21st century challenges and opportunities. Coronado High School courses are offered in seven industry sectors tied to local business industry needs. These opportunities provide high school students with skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary/college education, entry-level employment and/or career advancement. The instructional integration of academic and workplace skills provide career awareness and exploration, including paid and unpaid internship opportunities. CTE courses are taught by professional practitioners with recent/relevant industry experience.

CHS CTE/ROP Director Shane Schmeichel presented awards to 34 students for their outstanding accomplishments such as: excellent leadership skills, time management skills, positive attitude, knowledge of their subject area, worksite learning hours completed, mentors to new students, artistic abilities, commitment to learning, commitment to master any task, and demonstrating a professional work ethic.

Business Representatives award recipients were Kelley Casey of Kel Casey Photography, and Melissa Perkins of Just Hatched Photography.

All selected honorees were eligible for the San Diego County CAROCP 2014-2015 Awards ceremony, held on April 29th at San Diego County Office of Education. Winners of the countywide competition receive a monetary award from the Lloyd Halvin Scholarship fund, California Regional Occupational Centers & Programs (CAROCP), and corporate sponsors. This year’s CHS student county winner is Katy Titus, Professional Musical Theatre.

Anthony Dugan-Pinkston was the winner of the 6th annual program design contest, and he was recognized for his excellent work.
