Coronado Gateway Winner Announced

A city-sponsored competition has been underway for the past 2 months to select a design for an improved Coronado Gateway at the old Toll Plaza. City Manager Blair King announced on Friday that a Coronado Historical Association team, headed up by Lirpa Sloof, and comprised of urban designers, historical architects, and landscapers has won that competition with an inspired design.

“Improving the Toll Plaza should be a high priority,” Bruce Linder, the Coronado Historical Association Executive Director, said. “But we shouldn’t just improve landscaping, we think any new design should be practical and useful for both residents and visitors.”

Linder further explained that CHA’s vision for improved Toll Booth signage would have a tastefully designed neon sign warning travelers that Coronado has reached a point where it is totally “full.” “Lots of parking lots use this approach to save time and gas,” Linder explained, “the parking lot switches ‘on the sign when it is full and drivers just go away and don’t waste their valuable time driving in circles. We can use that same concept.”

Residents frequently complain of packed streets, little parking downtown, and difficulty in getting around the Island, especially during summer months. CHA thinks that a Gateway sign such as this would keep things under better control and, as Linder explained, “both residents and visitors will be happier and a happy visitor will spend more time and more money at local businesses and restaurants.”

Happy April 1st.
