Coronado Becomes First U.S. City to Require Helmets for all Bicyclists – Effective Today

Coronado City Council has approved a new ordinance that makes it illegal to ride any type of bicycle at any age without a helmet. Prior to today, only minors (riders under 18) had to wear helmets when riding a bicycle. The fine for riding without a helmet is $41.15 per infraction. Coronado Police Officer Lirpa Sloof shared that “CPD is going to crack down on bicyclists that aren’t wearing a helmet. Further, if the strap is not buckled properly around your chin, we are permitted to ticket that as well.”

eCoronado.com reached out to Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka (pictured above with supporters) and he responded to the mandate by saying, “This ordinance is a long time coming. If you live or visit Coronado, you are keenly aware that bicyclists are prevalent just about as much as cars. Those noggins need protecting and if paying a ticket helps them create a safe habit, I’m all for it.”

Last month, the Union Tribune ran a story about California considering a bill that would require all state bike riders wear a helmet. Many riders oppose such a bill even though common sense tells us that bicyclists will be safer with a helmet versus without one.

We encourage all riders of all ages to dust off those helmets, buckle your straps and ride safely around Coronado.
