Calling all Military Spouses for the Military Spouse JD Network sponsored “Making the Right Moves” Career Conference.
Friday, October 17, the MSJDN will host a career conference for military spouses at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California. A staggering 90 percent of female spouses are underemployed because of frequent relocations, licensing issues, and other barriers to employment. Military spouses earn 38 percent less than their civilian counterparts and are 30 percent more likely to be unemployed entirely. This conference will educate and connect professional military spouses to help combat these statistics and allow military spouses to flourish in the workplace.
A highlight of the day is a networking luncheon open to the general public to celebrate and support military spouses. Proceeds from the event will benefit a program providing free legal services to military families.
Though the event is geared towards military spouses with law degrees, it is truly applicable to any professional military spouse. The opening keynote is “How Extraordinary People Lead” and other sessions include topics like “Your Opening Pitch”, “Building a Career Plan”, “Leadership through Action”, and “Building your Network”. The networking luncheon from noon to 1:15pm is open to any and all who want to attend for a reduced fee of $25. Coronado’s own Mayor Casey Tanaka will present the afternoon keynote, “Service and Success” from 2:30-3pm.
The conference will also include appearances by Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez and Col. Linda Murnane (USAF, ret.) from the Hague.
Military Spouse JD Network (MSJDN) was formed in Summer 2011 by two military spouses frustrated with the challenges of maintaining a legal career that seemed incompatible with the military lifestyle. They formed MSJDN to advocate for licensing accommodations for military spouses, including bar membership without additional examination, as well as network with other military spouses with JDs. Since 2011, the membership of MSJDN has swelled to over 750 members and supporters. MSJDN has received letters of support from the National Military Family Association, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Conference of Chief Justices. In February 2012, with the support of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession, the ABA House of Delegates adopted a resolution supporting changes in state licensing rules for military spouses with law degrees. MSJDN supports such a rule change in each jurisdiction.
