The 2013-2014 CHS CTE/ROP Awards were held at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Theatre, 650 D Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118. The event was held on May 7th, 2014, with the CoSA Jazz Ensemble providing entertainment. Former Coronado High School ROP Sports Medicine student, Arrielle Luna, ATC, served as keynote speaker.
Coronado High School Career Technical Education (CTE) programs prepare students to identify and respond to 21st century challenges and opportunities. Coronado High School courses are offered in seven industry sectors tied to local business industry needs. These opportunities provide high school students with skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary/college education, entry-level employment and/or career advancement. The instructional integration of academic and workplace skills provide career awareness and exploration, including paid and unpaid internship opportunities. CTE courses are taught by professional practitioners with recent/relevant industry experience.
CHS ROP Director, Shane Schmeichel, presented awards to 41 students for their outstanding accomplishments such as: excellent leadership skills, time management skills, positive attitude, knowledge of their subject area, worksite learning hours completed, mentors to new students, artistic abilities, commitment to learning, commitment to master any task, and demonstrating a professional work ethic.
Business Representatives award recipients were Oscar Burciaga of the California Ballet Company, and Kelley Casey of Kel Casey Photography. Teacher awards went to Patrick Galligan, Video Production & Broadcast Journalism, and Adrian Gonzalez, Stagehand Technician and Theatre Design. Support staff awards went to Curtis Mueller, Light Designer, and ROP Instructional Specialist, Aida Diaz. Mrs. Diaz has been with the ROP program at CHS for 37 years and will be starting her well-deserved retirement at the end of the school year.
All selected honorees are eligible for the San Diego County CAROCP 2013-2014 Awards ceremony, scheduled for May 21st at San Diego County Office of Education. Winners of the countywide competition receive a monetary award from the Lloyd Halvin Scholarship fund, California Regional Occupational Centers & Programs (CAROCP), and corporate sponsors. This year’s CHS student county winner is Abbey Workman, Professional Musical Theatre.
Austin Linthicum was the winner of the 5th annual program design contest, and he was recognized for his excellent work.
