CASEY TANAKA
Mayor of Coronado Age: 36
Experience: Mayor: 2008 to Present, Councilmember: 2002 to Present, Historic Resource
Commission Chairman: 2001-2002, CHS History Teacher: 1999 to Present, and Coronado
resident since 1983. Education: 1997, BA with Honors in History, UCSD, California
Teaching Credential: Social Sciences, and 1994 CHS Graduate.
As Coronado’s Mayor, I’ve led the City Council in preserving Coronado’s vital services while
maintaining the solid financial position of our City. Other cities in the county/state face
terrible budgetary problems and have been forced to eliminate services and layoff
employees. In contrast, Coronado’s held the line on expenditures while assuring its
residents the finest municipal services to be found in California.
In this election, we must ask ourselves what we want from a Mayor. Shall we elect our
angriest, shrillest voices, or are we obligated to seek out those who are sage, calm, openminded, and above all, fair? As your Mayor, I’ve been rational, honest, and compassionate.
I listen to everyone, but I’m not afraid to speak my mind in a civil tongue. I’ve worked hard
to be an honorable public servant and now, I humbly seek your support to lead this great
City in the same positive direction for the next four years.
BARBARA DENNY
Councilwoman Age: 49
To preserve our island paradise and village atmosphere, we must resolve city finances,
overdevelopment, and traffic. As Mayor, I’ll continue building consensus on council while
I protect our community values and provide the civil, respectful leadership our island needs.
Finances. As Councilmember, I protected our tax dollars and reduced wasteful spending.
As Mayor, I’ll find additional ways to live within our means. I’ll defend you against parcel
taxes and sales tax hikes. I’ll be honest with you about the financial challenges we face
such as repaying our $375 million redevelopment debt on bonds and projects.
Over-development. As Mayor, I’ll provide consistent leadership to change our buildingrelated policies in order to solve problems caused by over-development including inadequate parking and overstressed infrastructure. I’ll continue to champion proactive code enforcement and property rights for all residents.
Traffic. Two years ago, you helped me stop the waste of our tax dollars on the Tunnel
boondoggle. As Mayor, I’ll continue to cut through red tape and work with our community,
Caltrans, the US Navy, and others in a productive manner to enact cost effective traffic
management solutions.

MICHAEL J. WOIWODE
Mayor Pro-Tem/Engineer Age: 65
What a blessing to live in Coronado. What an honor it is to represent you on a City Council
that delivers great city services, honors Coronado’s heritage, and adapts to the public’s
needs. Kathie, my wife of 41 years, and I raised five children here. We understand the
importance of creating a family friendly environment. As your council member these last
four years, that’s been my priority.
We’ve faced the fiscal problems common to all California cities: downturn in the economy,
reduced revenues, and elimination of development agencies. Yet Coronado is solvent. Our
reserves are excellent, and our budget sustainable. Public safety services excel. Downtown
is lively and family friendly.
Emphasizing neighborliness, we are working with the Navy and governments of the region
to increase carpooling and public transit to mitigate commuter traffic. We’ll embrace change
with an eye to maintaining the friendly, nourishing neighborhoods that characterize
Coronado.
I’m a businessman, Professional Engineer, retired Naval Officer; graduate of University of
Detroit and University of Southern California. Community involvement includes Sacred
Heart Church; Rotary Club; San Diego Military Advisory Council; and serving as president
of three industry associations.

SUSAN RING KEITH
Community Volunteer Age: 70
Susan Ring Keith was born in Coronado and joined a long family history firmly planted in
our beautiful and unique community. She supports numerous Coronado volunteer
organizations including the Floral Association, Crown Garden Club, Friends of the Library,
Navy League, MainStreet, and the Coronado Historical Association. Susan has served as
an elected member of the Coronado City Council. She was appointed by three City
Councils to serve on our City’s Planning Commission, Historic Resource Commission, and
Board of Trustees of the Library. Susan’s leadership and patriotism was recently
recognized when she christened a new Navy ship, USS Coronado – LCS4. She believes in
a planned approach to development which would provide equal respect to neighbors’
property as well as one’s own. Susan is committed to preserving the past, but more
importantly protecting our real estate values from the negative impacts of over building.
She believes in strictly enforced codes and Susan is a fiscal conservative whose budgeting
approach will have us live strictly within our means. If you are looking for a candidate with
experience on local issues, a love of Coronado, and a common sense approach to

KARI MCPHERSON
Elder Care/Realtor Age: 40+
I would be honored to represent you on the City Council where I’ll respond to your practical
needs first and foremost. I consider it a gift to call Coronado home, to experience daily the
uniqueness that makes our island special, greeting each other in passing from the Cays to
the Ferry Landing, surrounded by natural beauty, history preserved with dignity.
As a San Diego native and mom of 5 sons I have become increasingly involved in the
schools and community, including service projects with the Boy Scouts, Bridge & Bay
Garden Club, Junior Women’s Club, CHS football, NJROTC and organizing Artisans Alley
craft fair to keep music alive in our schools.
I lived a life of service here and abroad, working for a non-profit in Europe for 5 years
before moving to Coronado.
As your responsive Council member I intend to keep our beaches clean with a noncommercialized family atmosphere that protects our historic dunes and wildlife habitats,
keep the parks green and full of activity, support our businesses, work with Caltrans and
the Navy to improve traffic management, control our city expenses and pension benefits,
and be committed to open municipal government which is accountable to the people.
JEAN ROESCH
Educator/Community Leader
Living in Coronado for the past 35 years has been a privilege and has motivated me to
become actively involved in community organizations. I have held leadership
responsibilities as President of Coronado Soroptimist, FOCUS, South Bay Domestic
Violence Coalition, and Coronado Citizen’s Advisory Committee. I presently serve on the
Southwestern College District Board of Trustees and previously served 10 years on the
Coronado Unified School District Board of Trustees, holding President and Vice President
positions in both Districts. In addition to the above I am a Founding Board Member of
Coronado Christ Church Day School.
Recently appointed to the Oversight Board of the Coronado Redevelopment Agency. I am
very knowledgeable of our public resources and funding challenges. Being fiscally
responsible I will diligently seek creative ways to preserve and protect our cities funding to
maintain a balanced budget. My experience includes oversight of Southwestern Community
College District’s $89 million dollar budget that was balanced every year.
I will be proud and honored to serve on the Coronado City Council as an opportunity to
protect and enhance our quality of life and Give Back to our city and community that
continues to give our families and residence so much pleasure.

RICHARD BAILEY
Financial Analyst
I am running for city council because it is time for the next generation of Coronado leaders
to step up, get involved, and ensure that Coronado today remains Coronado tomorrow.
The City of Coronado is quite possibly the best place to call home. Our city has a rich
history, an engaged community, and an unsurpassed charming village atmosphere.
But our city is not without challenges.
We face an overbuilding problem that threatens our village character. We face an uncertain
financial future as California forces the closure of our Community Development Agency.
And above all, we face a shrinking sense of what makes our city best, a sense of
community.
If elected, my motto will be “Coronado First” as I will always vote for the preservation of our
village neighborhood and against the development of “McMansions.” My education and
professional experience with finance make me qualified to budget effectively for the years
ahead so we remain a fiscally sound municipality. I am running for Coronado City Council
because Coronado is my home and the community where my wife and I will raise our family
one day.
