After spending a day giving the Stanley Cup a tour of San Diego, from the Hotel Del Coronado to Petco Park to Mt. Soledad, then hosting a meet-the-Cup party near his Carlsbad home, Jeff Solomon relaxed on his living-room couch, past midnight, alone with sport’s most famous trophy.
He tilted the Cup this way and that, straining to read the names. He moved to the fireplace where the lighting was better.
And it hit him. Solomon, Los Angeles Kings vice president of hockey operations, will have his name engraved into the Stanley Cup. Just like Gordie Howe, Rocket Richard, Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky.
“The whole process,” said Solomon, “leaves your breathless.”
