El señor Smoky Bayless es un maestro de español en la preparatoria de Coronado. Yo soy muy afortunada de ser una de sus estudiantes en la clase avanzada de español de este maestro único. Tuve la oportunidad de sentarme con mi maestro un día por la mañana antes de empezar el día de clases y platicar sobre su vida.
¡Tiene una historia que podría inspirar a quien lo escuche!
El señor Bayless es en un isleño de tercera generación. Cuando el señor Bayless era chico, su familia decidió mudarse a Coronado siguiendo los pasos de su abuelo paterno quien vivió en Coronado años antes. Su abuelo paterno vivió en Coronado y fue piloto militar antes y durante la segunda guerra mundial.
El señor Bayless y su padre se graduaron de la misma preparatoria de Coronado. Su padre se graduó en 1958 y el en 1984. Me emociono mucho saber que mi maestro también aprendió en la misma escuela en done yo estoy estudiando.
Este joven maestro no siempre tuvo intensiones de ser educador. ¡Mucho menos de ser maestro de español! Pero un día, cuando era joven ya graduado de la prepa, fue a visitar a un maestro en la preparatoria de Coronado y este le pidió que si le podía ayudar a dar la clase ese día. Desde ese momento en adelante, el señor Bayless decidió que quería trabajar como maestro dándole clases a la juventud. El me dijo, “me gusto mucho convivir con los adolecentes y esto cambio mi vida.”
Sus estudios en la preparatoria y universitarios lo prepararon para aceptar el reto de ser maestro. El estudio un semestre en la Universidad Iberoamericana en México, D.F., y un año en la Universidad de Salamanca en España. También estudio otro año en la complutense de Madrid, España. Con toda esta experiencia pudo obtener la posición de maestro de español en la prepa de Coronado porque el maestro anterior se iba a jubilar.
No solamente es un maestro de gran calidad, pero el señor Bayless también es muy activo fuera de la escuela. Hace ejercicio para mantener su energía, salud y paz mental. Es un hombre que nunca para. Siempre está haciendo deportes y aprovechando la playa hermosa de Coronado. Tiene muchos pasatiempos que incluyen actividades en el mar como bucear y pescar. También escala montañas y le gusta velear.
Cuando llegábamos al final de nuestra entrevista para esta publicación, la pregunta más profunda que se me vino a la mente platicando con mi maestro fue, ¿Cuál es la importancia de hablar el español?
El me dio una respuesta que nunca voy a olvidar porque es tan cierto, “La capacidad de entender otro idioma y cultura no solamente abre puertas ilimitadas de trabajo, pero también nos abre puertas en nuestra tolerancia, nuestra manera de ver el mundo, otras culturas y otras gentes. Hablar otro idioma nos da la capacidad de comunicarnos y conectar con gente más allá de nuestras fronteras culturalmente y geográficamente.”

Mr. Smoky Bayless is a Spanish teacher at Coronado High School. I am very fortunate to be one of his students in the Advanced Placement Spanish class. I had the opportunity to sit with my teacher one day before school and talk about his life.
He has a story that could inspire anyone who listens to him!
Mr. Bayless is a third generation islander. When Mr. Bayless was a kid, his family moved to Coronado in the footsteps of his paternal grandfather who lived in Coronado years before. His paternal grandfather lived in Coronado and was a military pilot before and during World War II.
Mr. Bayless and his father graduated from the same high school in Coronado. His father graduated in 1958 and 1984. It’s exciting for me to know that my teacher also learned in the same school I’m studying at.
This young teacher did not always have intentions of being an educator, much less to be a Spanish teacher! But one day soon after he had graduated from high school, Mr. Bayless went to visit one of his old teachers. The teacher asked him if he could help teach the class that day. From that moment on, Mr. Bayless decided he wanted to work as a teacher with young people. He said, “I really liked spending time with teens and this changed my life.”
His studies in high school and college prepared him to take on the challenge of becoming a teacher. Mr. Bayless studied a semester at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, and one year at the University of Salamanca in Spain. He also studied another year in Complutense de Madrid, Spain. With all this experience, he obtained the position of Spanish teacher at Coronado high school where he replaced the previous teacher who was retiring.
Not only is he a high quality teacher, but Mr. Bayless is also very active outside of school. He exercises to maintain his energy, health and peace of mind. He is a man who never stops. He’s always doing sports and taking advantage of the beautiful beach in Coronado. He has many hobbies including off-shore activities like diving and fishing. He also rock-climbs and enjoys sailing.
When we reached the end of our interview, the deeper question that popped into my mind to ask him was: “What is the importance of speaking Spanish?”
He gave me an answer that I will never forget because it is so true, “The ability to understand another language and culture not only opens doors for jobs, but also opens doors to discover our tolerance, our way of seeing the world, other cultures and other peoples. Speaking another language gives us the ability to communicate and connect with people beyond our borders culturally and geographically. “
