The Coronado High School Counseling Department and The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be hosting “Out of the Darkness Week” at CHS from February 14, 2012 to February 17, 2012. The weeklong event will consist of classroom activities and presentations for high school students as well as a school-wide assembly to provide students with an opportunity to discuss the reality of this difficult topic.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention web site sates that suicide is the third leading cause of death among those 15 to 24 years old.
Leading up to the week of awareness activities for CHS students, the Parent Teacher Organization invites all parents to attend a Mental Health Awareness Workshop presented on February 2, at 6:30pm in the CHS Multi Purpose Room. The PTO will be featuring a special speaker on the topic of teen stress, anxiety and mental health.
The purpose of this workshop is to help parents and caregivers have an open discussion about depression and suicide prevention as well as emphasize available resources for parents to learn about healthy coping mechanisms for teens in crisis. The speaker is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Presentation.
All parents are invited to attend and learn about this important topic. Principal Karl Mueller will also be on hand to answer questions regarding February’s “Teen Mental Health Week”.
