Over the past couple of months interning for eCoroando.com and writing the Police Blotter I have noticed two common trends; Coronado has a lot of bicycle thefts and too many alcohol related violations, including DUIs.
Rides by Request, a service that not only picks you up after a night of drinking, but your car as well, serves Coronado! The drivers work in teams of two in order to pick you up at your exact location in a timely manner, sending you an ETA upon receiving your request for a ride, and then calling you once they arrive at your location. Then one of the Rides by Request team members drives you, your friends, AND your car home safely for CHEAPER than a two way cab ride.
In order to take advantage of this service, you must sign up online before requesting a ride. By inputting your information online, you are in their system. Then, any Thursday-Saturday night from 10pm-3am, you can either text or use the free iPhone app to send your location.
The CEO of Rides by Request, Victor Gallet, explains the idea came about while living and traveling in Europe where similar services are common.
“We figured why not in San Diego? The biggest challenge was figuring out how to do it in a way that was quick and efficient for such a large area. In Europe everything is compact and the drivers actually show up on foldable scooters that they then fit inside the client’s trunk; this obviously wouldn’t work in San Diego. So we decided to work in teams of two, one client driver and one chase driver,” said Gallet.
