CORONADO, Calif.-More than 50 Navy Exchange (NEX) Employees gathered together to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the NEX at Naval Air Station North Island, April 1.
Naval Base Coronado Commanding Officer, Capt. Yancy Lindsey said, “It is not only a celebration of 65 years of Navy Exchange (NEX) success, it’s also a celebration of outstanding customer support and value that the NEX delivers to us each and everyday.”
The event included a historical speech about the development of the NEX and a cake-cutting ceremony.
According to the Global Exchange, the associate Newsletter for the Navy Exchange system, the evolvement of the modern day NEX has come a long way. In the 1800s, Sailors had to depend on unreliable bumboats to purchase their personal items while aboard a ship. The merchandise was typically poor quality and sold at very high prices.
