Neighborhoods: A taste of Orange (Avenue)

“Authentic, vibrant and pedestrian friendly” is how Rita Sarich, executive director of Coronado MainStreet Ltd., describes Orange Avenue. Coronado’s main drag is a reflection of a city as a whole: rooted in the famous hotel, crisscrossed by Navy traffic, dappled with beach culture and comfortable at a moderate tempo.

Landmarks: Orange Avenue is anchored at the south end by the iconic Hotel del Coronado. The hotel, which opened in 1888, is credited with spawning the avenue’s business district, as small shops opened up to help support and supply the hotel. Today, Orange Avenue sports businesses that have been there for decades. Clayton’s Coffee Shop is nearly always busy, with locals and tourists alike. Farther down the street is Night and Day Cafe, which opened in 1927. Among the city’s oldest businesses are Central Drug Store and Holland’s Bicycles.
