Here is what Ledyard Hakes had to say:
1. Tell us about yourself. What’s your ‘Coronado story’ ?
I’m 60 years old, born and raised in Coronado. I’m like to say I’m a product of the Coronado School District as my father before me, and three of my Children. I currently have a Middle Schooler. My Grandmother picked the High School colors in 1915.
2. Why is running for School Board important to you?
I’m running to ensure both mine and your children a quality education. While all candidates are of the same belief I see the coming years as a traumatic period in which leadership will play a major role to in overcoming our financial difficulties. I believe I’m uniquely qualified to lead a community based solution.
3. What qualifies you to be on School Board?
The role of School Board Member duties are many and varied. We are first and foremost the Community’s representative. We are responsible for the continued financial health of our District. My background in the business of owning and operating various enterprises has prepared me to be an effective manager of the financial portion of the District. I have been both a student and a parent, and a community activist in Coronado. I understand the unique relationship we have in Coronado between the City and the Schools.
4. What are the top 3 issues that Coronado schools face today and how will you work at solving them?
Money, Money ,Money. All other issues will be taking a back seat to our ever decreases funds. The State of California has abrogated their financial responsibilities leaving you and I with the fall out. It is going to take a concerted effort by all “shareholders” to mitigate this event. The district will be asking each of us to share in the solution. We can finally become a true community by coming together.
5. What do you want voters to remember about you when they go to cast their vote?
I would encourage all to vote. I’m running because some one in my background encouraged me to be involved and to pay back that which was given. We all owe a duty to those who come after us, as those did who educated us. I believe we are directly responsible for our institutions and that is why I’m running. Thanks for caring.
