Duane is a local from Ramona, CA and has been racing since a teenager, starting in go karts in the Midwest at age 13. At age 17 he started racing professionally, racing Sprint Cars on tracks in the Midwest earning Rookie of the Year at I-70 speedway. In 1970 he was paralyzed in a racing accident.
In 1969 Duane joined the Air Force. While serving as a reservist in the Air Force he was trained as a medic. He was medically retired following a racing accident in 1970.
