SAN DIEGO—Authorities say a 69-year-old pilot was rescued from his helicopter after going down in the San Diego Bay.

Harbor Police tell the San Diego Union-Tribune that the pilot was the only one aboard Sunday when the helicopter hit the water just before 6:30 p.m.

The pilot told police the aircraft had mechanical problems just after he took off from a nearby yacht.

A rescue crew happened to be in the area and got to the man in about a minute. He was taken to a hospital with back pain, cuts and bruises.

Police tell San Diego’s KGTV that the man was attempting an emergency landing on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge but ended up in the water below.
