Coronado Council Votes to Kill Study of Tunnel

Here’s an excerpt from the Union-Tribune article entitled “Council Votes To Kill Study of Tunnel” on Friday 16 July 2010:

Officials have explored the idea for almost 30 years of building a tunnel under Fourth Street to alleviate traffic. This was the third tunnel-related advisory measure Coronado voters were asked to consider. The last vote was taken in 1998.

Now the city will have to deal with the fallout after being awarded $9 million in federal grants to fund the study. It has collected more than $6 million.

Councilwoman Barbara Denny said she would be asking for an independent audit of exactly how some of those federal funds were spent.

Meanwhile, more work lies ahead.

“The transportation issue’s not going away,” Denny said. “There’s much work to be done in terms of managing traffic in Coronado and our excellent staff will be put to use serving the public in that manner.”
