Coronado polo player ready for the sprints

CORONADO — During spring break, Coronado senior Rex Butler played water polo in Hungary. Next fall, he will join the team at USC.

In between, Butler is looking to defend his San Diego Section Division II titles in the boys 50-yard freestyle and 100 free. He advanced in the prelims in both events Thursday at Coronado High after returning to full-swim mode the past two weeks.

“First I stopped playing water polo and then I stopped lifting,” Butler said. “So I’m curious to see where I’m at.”

That would be right in contention again for the finals on Saturday at the same site as Butler tied for the top time in the 50 free (21.22) and qualified second in the 100 free (47.66) in competitive fields.

While he’s now more devoted to water polo, Butler got his aquatic start as a competitive swimmer. He followed a path blazed by his sister, Katelyn, who won the girls 50 freestyle section crown in each of her four seasons at Valley Center (2001-04).

Butler made a quick impact after moving to Coronado for his sophomore year, scoring the winning goal for the Islanders in the water polo section finals.
