Proposed Coronado Tunnel Could Be Terrorist Target

CORONADO, Calif. — Two retired U.S. Navy admirals said on Monday they are concerned that the proposed tunnel under Coronado Island, if completed, could be a target for a terrorist attack.

“It is a target for terrorism. We have to think that way,” said retired Admiral Leon Edney.

Retired Vice-Admiral David Richardson agreed.

“The ships and the facilities at Naval Air Station North Island are very important to our national defense,” he said.

Supporters of the tunnel include Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka and four Coronado city council members said the tunnel will lighten traffic during rush hour.

Mayor Tanaka said people who did not support the tunnel could look at the terrorist issue and use it as a deal breaker. “It’s something that should be studied for survivability,” he said.
