CHS Girls Water Polo: Islanders scoring then singing in rain

When rain began in the second quarter, it poured goals for the Coronado High girls water polo team in the section Division II final.

The Islanders and Bishop’s played a scoreless first period before Coronado busted loose for six goals in the second quarter and a three-goal halftime lead en route to a 10-7 victory for its third consecutive title last night at La Jolla High’s Coggan Pool.

Hillary Estrada and Ashley Young each scored two of their three goals for the top-seeded Islanders (24-8) in the second quarter. Fellow senior Shelby Couture also had a pair in the period.

“We just needed a quarter to relax and settle down,” said Estrada, who is heading to UC Irvine. “We just really worked together as a team and fed off each other’s energy to come out strong.”

This title represented a finale for nine Coronado seniors, including many together since middle school, when they started under Islanders coach David Throop.
