The North Island Naval Air Station (NASNI) military base is off-limits to and, sadly, remains a mystery for a great many civilian residents of Coronado. Given the countless historic military, industrial and architectural relics present there, cruising around North Island can be like traveling back through time.
One of the most picturesque areas of North Island is a collection of Spanish colonial revival-style structures, whose focal point is a stately building with a tall tower, designed by the renowned architect
Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and completed in 1920. Goodhue’s robust portfolio includes the California Tower and surrounding buildings in
Balboa Park, the
Nebraska State Capitol building, and
Cheltenham, a typeface he designed in 1896 which is currently being used for headlines by the
New York Times.
In his tribute, we extended Goodhue’s name to cover the entire area around his buildings on our
Coronado Neighborhoods print. The structures in Goodhue Square house the headquarters of the U.S. Naval Air Forces Command for the Pacific Fleet.

RECOMMENDED Playing sports in historic settings is a rare privilege in a place as generally new as Southern California, so take advantage of the tennis courts and swimming pool in the heart of Goodhue Square.
DID YOU KNOW? The
silver half dollar released by the federal government commemorating the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition (known to collectors as the San Diego Half) pictures the California Tower, Balboa Park’s most recognizable structure, designed by Bertram Goodhue for the Panama-California Exposition held there in 1915-16.
ABOUT ORANGE AND PARK
Orange & Park is a site created by Coronado locals with Coronado-related art prints, stickers and a
blog.
The Coronado Neighborhoods screen-print breaks the whole island into different boroughs. We exercised artistic freedom to plot the sections of Coronado that lacked established names and borders. From time to time we post explanations and stories behind selected areas like the one above.
