Communication from CUSD Superintendent Felix Coronado Police and the federal terrorist joint task force are investigating threats made against Strand Elementary and Village Elementary schools. The threats were made in three separate posts last week on Craigslist. The posts also target Cabrillo Elementary and Bay Point Pre-school in Point Loma. The person who posted claims to hate the U.S. military, specifically the U.S. Navy, and asks terrorists to attack the schools and the children attending the schools sometime in October. The posts show photos of the schools and inquire about the use of weapons including guns and bombs. The photos are stock pictures taken from the school website. Coronado Police officials believe that while it could be someone just expressing themselves inappropriately, they take all threats of this nature very seriously. I do not believe the threat to be imminent nor of a serious enough nature to consider postponing the opening of all classes on August 25th. I am working closely with Coronado Police Chief Lou Scanlon, City Manager Mark Ochenduszko, and the Commander of Naval Base Coronado Captain Yancy Lindsey to properly inform our community about this continuing threat. It is our hope that the perpetrator of this felony crime can be brought to justice soon.
