Council victory sends message, Denny says

CORONADO — Attorney Barbara Denny said voters sent a message when they elected her Tuesday to fill a City Council seat that has been vacant since November. “By electing me to office, Coronado voters said yes to maintaining our quality of life, village atmosphere, historic preservation, public safety, and my park-and-ride program,” Denny said yesterday. Denny, 46, won Tuesday’s special election with 42.6 percent of the vote. Former Councilman Phil Monroe, her nearest of two other competitors, received 35.5 percent. Retired Marine Jerry Mitchell received 21.9 percent. “By electing me, voters said no to a tunnel, high-density overdevelopment and city parcel taxes,” Denny said. Denny said that a tunnel is cost prohibitive, and that she will work to fight development projects where four homes are built on land that once held one. She also has been promoting a park-and-ride program that she hopes will get nonresidents and drivers who are not headed to North Island Naval Air Station to leave their vehicles east of the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and ride energy-efficient buses.
