This past Tuesday, the Cathedral Catholic High School girls water polo team came to the BBMAC pool for a tough game against Coronado. Playing in goal was recent Princeton acceptee, Isabel Zaller, who had a total of ten blocks, minimizing Cathedral’s scoring. Junior Sheila Tomlin scored more than half of the Islanders’ points, with a total of five goals. Unfortunately, CCHS outscored the CHS girls, resulting in a loss of 9-14.
That warm-up game prepared the Islanders for the America’s Finest City tournament this weekend. The Islanders’ first game was played Friday against Esperanza High School from Anaheim. Coronado blew this team out of the pool, winning 12-3. Reese Oliver led the team offensively with seven goals, while Zaller blocked seven of the opponent’s attempts. The second game on Friday against Rosary High School went to Coronado once again, winning 12-6. Oliver and junior Ryan Sund each scored four goals, and Zaller had nine blocks throughout the game.
On Saturday, the Islanders played their third game of the tournament against Huntington Beach High School. Coronado kept their winning streak, now at three games, as they won 6-4. Sund, once again, was the top scorer with three goals, while Zaller kept Huntington Beach out of the goal with a total of eight blocks. Unfortunately, the streak ended with the next game against Santa Margarita High School, as Coronado began to fatigue. The final score was 3-8, in favor of Santa Margarita. Ellie Brownlee scored two goals for Coronado, and Zaller had two saves. The final game of the tournament resulted in another loss against Schurr High School, losing 9-10. With the first three strong wins, Coronado was able to end in fourth place out of over thirty teams in the tournament.
The team’s current record is eight wins to eleven losses.
