New Police Motorcycle:  The City has purchased a 2017 R1200RT BMW motorcycle for traffic patrol. The Police Department brought the motorcycle to a recent City Council meeting to show it the community. The new bike was purchased because Honda, the brand the City is currently using, no longer makes a police motorcycle version. Traffic officers will continue to use the remaining motorcycles but replacements will be the BMWs moving forward. The BMW is common among law enforcement agencies, including San Diego County. The motorcycle, fully equipped for traffic duty, cost about $35,000.

Navy SEAL Commemorative Statue Award:  The American Public Works Association has announced that the First Ashore installation of the “Naked Warrior” statue was selected for an Outstanding Award. A plaque will be presented at a luncheon in San Diego on May 11. A City representative will attend to accept the award. The “First Ashore” installation includes a bronze statue commemorating the elite men of the Navy’s Underwater Demolition Teams, or UDTs, of World War II. The project was high-profile with a significant one-year time constraint in acquiring and locating the statue and decorative base, and completing a landscaping plan. The site had to be planned and developed, and a bid sent out for installation by Veterans Day 2017. During the process, several locations were considered and one overlooking Glorietta Bay was selected.

2017 Flower Show:  The 95th annual Coronado Flower Show is Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9. Set up and preparation will begin Monday, April 3, in Spreckels Park. The event will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on April 8, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 9.  “No Parking, Tow Away” signs will be posted on portions of Orange Avenue, Sixth Street and C Avenue around the park to restrict parking before and during the event. Two new portable restroom trailers will be in place over the Flower Show next weekend. The colorful wraps, depicting early Coronado rail cars and the old Tent City carousel, are being applied to the outside of the trailers.
