Ride the Lights 2016

Ride the Lights 2016On Sunday evening, a couple hundred locals and friends gathered at Spreckels Park to kick off the 4th Annual Ride the Lights event. Bikes were decorated with a multitude of colorful lights and accessories, including Christmas trees, snowmen, presents and garland; and people wore Santa hats, ‘ugly’ sweaters, antlers and more.

After some brief remarks on safety and courtesy, and thanks to the city and the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the riders pedaled off… It wasn’t a race, but a leisurely ride up and down the village streets to view the decorative holiday lights adorning the homes.  There were ‘oooohs’ and ‘aaaaahs’ from the riders and holiday music was heard playing both from some riders and also from some spectators on the street.  Even residents who didn’t ride bikes participated, waving to bicyclists as they went past their festively lit homes.

The two and a half mile ride culminated back at Spreckels Park where hot cocoa and cookies were awaiting the participants. Traditional Christmas carols were sung and anyone wanting to join in was welcome.
