  • High Surf, Rips Expected:  The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through Monday, November 7, due to high surf and strong rip currents expected to start impacting our beaches today, November 4. Waves are expected to be in the 4-to-6-foot range with occasional 7-foot sets and rip currents will be strong. Lifeguards urge caution to all beachgoers, especially those going in the water. They ask that you check in with Coronado Lifeguards before entering the water and always swim near a lifeguard. Lifeguards will be going off duty at 6:30 p.m. today and Saturday, November 4-5, and then beginning on Sunday, November 6, they will be going off duty at 5:30 p.m. due to the time change. Those coming to the beach to see the high surf are advised to avoid getting too close or climbing out on to rocks or jetties, obey posted warning signs and follow lifeguard instructions. Have fun and be safe.

  • 50th Remotely Monitored Bike Arrest:  A bike theft arrest Monday, October 31, marked the 50th since the Coronado Police Department’s remotely monitored bicycle program began just over two years ago. Officers worked closely with the San Diego District Attorney’s Office to develop the program in early 2014. Since then, officers have made 50 arrests, even some suspects arrested twice for stealing the same bike. Here are a few tips on how you can help us take a bite out of crime:
    • Make it hard to steal. Use a U-lock.
    • It’s free to register your bicycle atwww.coronadopd.com.
    • Leave your bicycle in a visible location, avoid leaving it out overnight.
    • Lock your bike when it’s being stored in the garage or backyard.
  • ‘First Ashore’ Art Installation/Library Exhibit:  The City is expecting overflow crowds for the “First Ashore” art installation, dedication ceremony and statue unveiling of the “Naked Warrior” on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11. Seating will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early. The dedication will be held at 11 a.m. at Glorietta Bay Park. The “First Ashore” art installation on Veterans Day includes a bronze statue titled the “Naked Warrior.” Nicknamed “naked warriors” for their minimal clothing and equipment, these frogmen would swim into enemy waters from far offshore to reconnoiter heavily defended beaches without weapons or support. This will be the first statue in the City commemorating the City’s and Navy’s long and unique relationship. A reception will follow. Attendees are asked to RSVP by calling (619) 520-2633. A complementary exhibit at the Coronado Public Library featuring the Navy Underwater Demolition Teams and SEAL Teams is on display now.
