Maybe I’m just an old party-pooper, but I’m wondering if anyone else is bothered by these “sky candles” and is there anything we can do about them? They are large, tissue paper laterns with a lighted wick, that float up into the air like hot-air balloons. With luck, they come back down AFTER the wick has burned out, but not always.
I admit that they were very cute in the movie “Tangled” and are popular in Asia, but you have to have a permit for them in San Diego County as they can be a fire hazard. However, that doesn’t seem to stop anyone from launching them at night on the beach. I saw one almost hit one of the towers at the Shores on Saturday night, and another one just hit my house. I know it was a different one, because this one had writing all over it and was dated with last night’s date. Apparently it floated around all night until it finally hit my house this morning. I promise you that the message of “peace and love” was pretty much lost on me, as I was the one who had to clean up after it.
I’m curious as to where people think these things are going to end up? Not the moon, that’s for sure. Do they even THINK about it at all? It’s just another form of human amusement, done with no consideration for others or the environment. What goes up, comes down. Even if they don’t start a fire, hit power lines or trees; at best, they make a mess when they land.
You are playing with fire. This is not the movies. It’s not harmlessly romantic. It’s real life, and your idea of fun could turn out badly for someone else. Let’s NOT find out just how bad that could be.
