Coronado High School’s Class of 2014 – Student Spotlight

As Coronado High School winds down for the approaching summer, the seniors were still in full-fledged work mode until the final AP tests were turned in. If anything, it was for the impressive colleges that the seniors will be attending, most beginning around August. It is also thanks to the dedication of the Islander staff, which is present daily through their commitment to keeping seniors on campus and on time, and to promote a welcoming and understanding environment for them. As Senioritis creeps in, however, the conversation that seems to be most prevalent around campus is that of university. I talked to some fellow CHS seniors and, though comically or seriously, they all wanted to share about their futures.

Jordan Narramore, Humboldt State
What is your planned major? Communications.
Will you be playing sports in college? Yes, I’m committed for football as QB. I got an athletic scholarship.
What will you miss most about Coronado? Being able to see the water everyday.

Keelin Shaughnessy, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland)
Why did you choose Ireland? The money and the fact that it’s not in America.
What will you be majoring in? English and Film.

What will you miss most about Coronado? Not applicable (laughs).

Abigail Callahan, University of Southern California
Why did you choose USC? I’ve been committed since junior year, for soccer. I got an athletic scholarship.
What do you hope to major in? Film and television production!
Are there any shows that inspire you now? I love American Horror Story.
What will you miss most about Coronado? My closest friends.

Michael Sappenfield, University of Pennsylvania
What is your planned major? Business management.
Did you receive any scholarships? Yes! A full academic scholarship to the Wharton School of Business.
What will you miss most about Coronado? The ocean and my friends.

Emmet Gormican, Connecticut College
What made you choose Connecticut of all places? My grandmother went there, and I want her to love me harder.
Will you be continuing sports in college? Yes, I’m playing lacrosse and badminton.
Did you receive any scholarships? I’m not cool enough for scholarships, but I did get an award for reading a Dr. Seuss book all by myself!
What will you miss most about Coronado? I’ll miss my besties the most, then my mom.

Kristin Lindeman, Loyola University Maryland

What made you choose Maryland? I chose Loyola because I decided that even though I love California, I wanted a change from what I’m used to while also keeping the small school feel that I’ve received at Coronado. It is also close to DC, which will give me great internship opportunities for my major, political science.
What are you looking forward to? I’m really excited to go to the lacrosse games, I’ve heard that the men’s team is #1 in the nation right now.
What will you miss most about Coronado? I will miss the positive outlook on life that the community embodies. Everywhere you go people are always smiling; everyone is happy to be here. I believe that because of this, kids that come out of CHS want to become successful so that one day they too can raise their families in such a truly special place.

Tyler Frances, Harvard

Why did you decide on Harvard? Ever since I was young I had always dreamed of going to Harvard, even though I knew it was extremely difficult to get in and I didn’t really have much of a chance. I applied early action and once I found out I had been accepted in December, I committed immediately and quit applying to other schools.
What is your plan for your major? So far I’m thinking of majoring in biomedical engineering, but that’s really just a starting point. I love science, especially biology and chemistry, but I want to experiment with different courses at college before I decide what career I want to pursue.
Did you receive any scholarships? So far I haven’t received any scholarships…Awkward (laughs).
What will you miss most about Coronado? The thing I will miss above all is all the friends that I’ve made at CHS over the past few years. It’s going to be really difficult for me to leave everyone behind when I go off to college, but I know I’ll maintain my relationships with the people who are most important to me. And of course I’ll definitely miss Coronado’s beach weather when I’m freezing my way through Boston’s winter blizzards.

Come see the 273 members of Coronado High School’s Class of 2014 graduate at CHS on June 5, at 7pm. Go Islanders!

Caroline was 15 years old when her family moved to Coronado. Though she was a “transplant”, Caroline found a home in the Coronado community near-immediately: she became an intern for “The Coronado Times”; helped reinstate the CHS newspaper, “The Islander Times”; was a volunteer dog-walker for PAWS; and a faithful Concert in the Park attendee. After completing her BA in English at the University of California Santa Barbara, she went on to craft answers for Amazon Alexa devices and write creatively on the side. Fast forward seven years, Caroline is thrilled to return as a Reporter for “The Coronado Times.” Have a story for The Coronado Times to cover? Send news tips or story ideas to: [email protected]
