Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Three Feet for Safety Act
On Tuesday, September 16, the “Three Feet for Safety Act” went into effect. Coronado Police Officers received training on the new law, which makes it illegal for a motor vehicle driver to overtake or pass a bicycle proceeding in the same direction on a roadway, with a distance of less than three feet between any part of the motor vehicle and any part of the bicycle or its operator. If the driver of a motor vehicle is unable to comply with this rule due to traffic or roadway conditions, the driver of the motor vehicle shall slow to a speed that is reasonable and prudent, and may pass, only when doing so would not endanger the safety of the bicycle operator. The new law takes into account the size and speed of the motor vehicle and bicycle, traffic conditions, weather, visibility, and surface and width of the highway. Eucalyptus Tree Removal Update
The City’s contract arborist will remove four high risk Eucalyptus trees from the public right-of-way in the 100 block of E Avenue on September 22 through September 24. The nearly 60-foot-tall trees provide beauty and shade but pose an unacceptable risk to public safety and private property. The City is working with the Street Tree Committee and residents in the area to develop a plan for replacement tree options. The City’s intent is to select tree varieties that will closest match the unique and beautiful character of this block, while minimizing future safety concerns. The process of selecting replacement trees will include identifying nurseries where they can be purchased, preparing the recipient sites and planting the trees. Fire and Water Damage
The Coronado Fire Department responded to a small structure fire on Thursday evening, September 18, at an apartment complex located at 143 D Avenue. The source of the fire was determined to be a plastic pan that ignited inside an oven, ultimately catching fire and producing heavy smoke. There was water damage to several units in the apartment complex; however, no residents have been displaced.
Historic Resource Commission
At its meeting on Wednesday, September 17, the Historic Resource Commission designated the property at 940 Country Club Lane as a Historic Resource. The Commission also recommended approval to City Council of a Mills Act Agreement for 1000 Adella Avenue, as well as approval of a Historic Alteration Permit with zoning exception requests, related to setbacks and parking for the property at 823 H Avenue. Finally, the Commission considered the Adult Activity Center project at 1019 Seventh Street, and did not recommend to City Council certification of the Negative Declaration of Environmental Impact or approval of the Historic Alteration Permit.
Bicycle Theft Arrests
On Saturday, September 13, officers arrested two male suspects for stealing the Police Department’s remotely monitored bicycle. The men stole the bicycle from Orange Avenue around 11:20 p.m., and placed it in the back of their pick-up truck. The truck was stopped at the intersection of Fourth Street and Alameda Boulevard where officers took the two two men into custody. Juan Villapando and Fernando Alba are being charged with grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracymen into custody. Fall Clean-Up
Each year, the City of Coronado and EDCO disposal sponsor fall and spring clean-up events, which are also known by many residents as “bulky trash” weeks. Mark your calendars because the fall event is quickly approaching. Beginning on Monday, October 6 through October 10, residents will be able to dispose of items that are too large or “bulky” to fit in their trash receptacles. To participate, residents can place the large item(s) alongside their trash and recycle bins on their regularly scheduled collection date (see below for a map of residential collection dates by area). EDCO will have additional trucks throughout the City to collect the large items. Anything that can be salvaged or recycled will be transported to the proper processing facility. The City typically collects 50 to 70 tons of bulky items during these events, with a recycling rate close 70 percent. More information will be available on the City’s website as the event gets closer.
