Coronado Firefighters and Coronado Police Officers invite the community to celebrate the City’s 22nd annual Open House on Sunday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Officials will close off the streets around Coronado’s main fire house on Sixth Street near D Avenue as well as streets near Coronado’s Police Department and invite the public to meet local public safety officials. The Coronado Police Department will offer tours of their facilities. Visitors can walk through the apparatus bays, where the fire trucks are parked, at the Fire Department headquarters. Fire officials also will offer fire safety exercises for children at the facility. Other local, state and federal public safety agencies will be on hand to provide information on the services they provide and to answer questions.
“It’s a fun day and our opportunity to get to know our citizens and interact with the community as it relates to the public safety services and resources available to them,” said Fire Department Chief Mike Blood. “We look forward to this event every year.”
The Public Safety Open House, which is held annually during Fire Prevention Week, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a family-friendly day with activities for children, such as face-painting and a coloring contest. Hot dogs are free while supplies last and musical entertainment will be provided.
Coronado’s event has become a public safety expo featuring local and outside agencies with the Coronado acting as the host. The Open House is a great way to educate many people about public and fire safety and the services available to them. Coronado’s public safety officials will provide residents with information to help prevent fires at home and protect their families from being victims of crime.
Coronado Fire Chief Mike Blood said the Open House also demonstrates how regional public agencies work together. Among participating fire agencies this year are the Federal Fire Department, Imperial Beach, U.S. Fish and Wildlife and California Department of Forestry. Law enforcement agencies representing San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the California Highway Patrol, San Diego Harbor Police and U.S. Border Patrol will be on hand.
Coronado lifeguards bring out their popular dunk tank to serve up lessons in water safety. In addition, agencies from around the county will occupy resource booths. Members of the Coronado Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, will talk about how to be prepared for disaster. The Coronado Emergency Radio Operators will provide demonstrations.
