Avenue of Heroes Dedication Ceremony Set for Veterans Day

Coronado, CA (October 29, 2014) – Coronado invites the public to the Veterans Day dedication of the Avenue of Heroes, a new program that will honor men and women of the military who have called Coronado home with banners along Third and Fourth Streets.

Officials with the City of Coronado, VFW Post 2422, the Third and Fourth Streets Neighborhood Association, and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the Avenue of Heroes and Hometown Hero Banner program and will be on hand Tuesday, November 11, as Mayor Casey Tanaka and Naval Base Coronado Commanding Officer Capt. Christopher E. Sund and special guests unveil the first two banners. They will explain the program, which also honors the City’s nearly 100-year partnership with the Navy.

Local kindergarten singing group, the Radical Rabbits, led by teacher Nancy Ratcliffe, will entertain with patriotic songs. The dedication will be held at 10 a.m. in the visitor parking lot at Naval Air Station North Island, at the corner of Third Street and Alameda Boulevard. Immediately following the ceremony, there will be a community reception at The Glenn Curtiss House hosted by the Burgos family. Entertainment will be provided by singer/guitarist, James Cramer, who is active duty at the Naval Amphibious Base.

At the reception, the Coronado Historical Association will display history boards about Glenn Curtiss and the house. Kidology will have an activity table with airplane gliders to assemble. Thanks to Holly Gaughan, who is providing decorations, and to Kellee Hearther’s daughters, who will be hosting their annual bake sale to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project with baked goods donated by Melissa Bowlby, Alison Borszich, Robbins Kelly, and Jennifer Reynolds. The Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York, is sending brochures, and the Wounded Warrior Project also is donating items to give away. Refreshments will be served and ample parking is available in the Navy visitor parking lot, adjacent to the event.

Applications, which will soon be added to the Avenue of Heroes web page, will be accepted for the banner program for candidates living or deceased, who live or have lived in Coronado and honorably served in any branch of the military.
