VFW SUPPORTS CORONADO SCHOOLS:

Will Sponsor Special Skydiver Salute

CORONADO – Thanks to the hard work of Coronado teacher Amy Steward and support from local businesses such as Post 2422 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veteran’s Day takes on new meaning in Coronado. It’s no longer just a celebration, but a seed of awareness and appreciation in Steward’s young students that is growing wildly.

On Friday, Nov. 7, Steward and the Coronado Middle School (CMS) will host numerous military veterans at CMS to meet students and share their stories. One of the highlights of the day will be a parachute jump on the Coronado High School football field. The VFW has donated funds to help make the parachute jump possible. This is their fifth consecutive year of sponsorship.

The event is called, “Take A Veteran To School Day.” It begins at 7:20 a.m. with the arrival of veterans from every war beginning with World War II, followed by a continental breakfast, a CMS news broadcast and a group photo. After that, veterans split up (two per room) and speak in the actual CMS classrooms. The parachute jump takes place at 9:45 a.m.

Members of Sky Dive San Diego will jump from their airplane high above Coronado, with participants of the celebrated parachute team landing on the high school football field.

This very special program is sponsored by the History Channel and hosted by the Coronado Middle School and Time Warner.

“The job Coronado Middle School has done, and in particular Amy Steward, to make our children more aware of the veterans is just outstanding,” said Mike Turner, spokesman for VFW Post 2422. “Here at the VFW, it’s our business to care for and celebrate our veterans. What Amy’s program does is provide opportunities for school children to meet these veterans. The whole program spans generations, and creates memories the children will carry the rest of their lives. More than that, it gives these young students an appreciation for the men and women who keep our country free.”

Several moving videos and documentaries about veterans will be shared during the broadcast created by Steward’s communication students. The entire broadcast will air at a later date on Coronado’s Time Warner – channel 19.

Take a Veteran to School Day began in 2007 and is a national program developed by the History Channel to link veterans with students across the country. Schools and communities invite veterans to share their stories and receive thanks for their service. While the program is available year around, most schools create events surrounding the celebration of Veterans’ Day.

Steward said she expects the aircraft to be time on target at 9:45 a.m. The general public is invited to watch, but seats in the football stadium are reserved for students.

The skydivers are from Buzz Fink’s Sky Dive San Diego. Fink has children in the Coronado school system and is donating the services of his group of skydivers and the airplane. Most of the jumpers are also veterans.

Last year’s event was duplicated in about 6,000 schools across the country. Coronado hosts one of the largest events nation-wide, according to representatives from The History Channel.
