CoSA takes a Modern Look on Shakespeare with the Boogie Wonderland Era

A question often asked is what would modern times be without Shakespeare; however, this month local students are instead asking what would Shakespeare be like in the modern times? The answer, in their opinion, is A Midsummer’s Night Fever. A musical based on William Shakespeare’s original work A Midsummer’s Night Dream, the show features a twist — the characters are instead set against the backdrop of a 1970s disco club. Featuring students from Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA), Coronado High School, and Pathway Charter School all dressed in their best 1970’s apparel along with some funky roller skates, theatergoers should be prepared to find themselves dancing in their seat.

The play, as described by Katarina Gustin, a CoSA Student who plays Helena, “is an exciting experience that will be a great time for anyone in the audience, whether they be eighty years old or five months old.” Katarina and fellow students have been preparing for the show for over two months with after school and weekend rehearsals, learning new dance combinations as well as memorizing their lines.

Written by Glenn Paris and Claudio Raygoza, the show feels like an hour long dance rehearsal with actors often walking through the audience and inviting viewers to come and show their dance moves with along with them as they boogie the night away. Director Kimberly Strassburger, has created a fun illusion filled set and invites anyone joining them to wear polyester and dance clothing to dance and laugh along with the students. Prizes will be given out to those with the best costumes and/or dance moves.

Food and beverages, made by Culinary Students studying at Palm Academy, will be available for purchase during the shows and all profits made will go to supporting the school, its culinary program, and CoSA. However, each performance is limited to 100 audience members and seating is by general admission; so grab your tickets while you still can! Show times are Friday, January 30th, 2015 at 8:00 p.m., with two shows on Saturday the 31st at 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. The following week will have a show on Friday, February 2nd at 8:00 p.m., as well as Saturday the 7th with two different shows at 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. Ticket prices (according to CoSA Box Offices Fares) are $18 for Adults, $14 for Senior (65+), $14 for Military (Active Duty/Retired), $8 Students (non-CUSD and all College), and $6 CUSD Students and Staff.”

Looking for a really unique experience? Local restaurant The Tavern is hosting a special dinner show version on February 5 at 7:00 p.m. For more details on the dinner show, contact either the CoSA Office or The Tavern.

Whichever show you decide to catch, know that you’re in for a good time. All performers are looking forward to seeing you dance your heart out to the cabaret-disco style musical.
