Pomona Roundabout Earns More Honors

CORONADO, CA (March 18, 2015) – The City’s roundabout at the intersection Pomona and Adella avenues and Seventh Street has earned yet another award for its design and construction.

The League of California Cities, an association of city officials, has named the Pomona Roundabout as the winner of its 2015 Outstanding Local Streets and Roads Project Awards program in the safety or intelligent transportation system project category.

2015 PS – Roundabout rocksThis brings to three the number of awards the project has earned since it reopened last August. The City found out in February that the roundabout project was selected by the American Society of Civil Engineers’ San Diego County Engineering Council as the winner of both the “Engineering Project of the Year” and “Outstanding Engineering Project” awards for 2014 during the region’s celebration of National Engineering Week. According to the organization, the awards are intended to recognize recent contributions to engineering within San Diego County.

The League of California Cities said the project “exemplifies the work the awards program seeks to spotlight in this category.” The City will accept the award at the 2015 Public Works Officers Institute’s awards luncheon next week.

The roundabout solved both traffic circulation and safety issues for the City at the oddly shaped three-way intersection. It was the result of a successful test project that was made permanent. It has helped reduce vehicle speed, improve bike and pedestrian mobility, upgrade storm drains and infrastructure, and beautify the area. Landscaping improvements included palm trees and drought-tolerant plants.

The City spent $1.3 million for the capital project. For questions regarding the award, call Jim Newton at (619) 522-7313 or send an email to [email protected].
