Highlights from the City Manager’s Weekly Update: Recycling Scavencing Ordinance to be Considered

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Large Tent at Golf Course

As repairs begin to be made to the Golf Course Cart Barn roof, the carts will be temporarily housed in a large tent set up this week next to the driving range. The City Council approved a contract last month to repair the Cart Barn, which was built in 1996, after several roof trusses were discovered to be out of vertical alignment. Work should be completed by May 8. Costs are being covered by insurance.

Recycle Scavenging Issues

The City Council will consider an ordinance later this month to address the issue of illicit scavenging from all residential, public and commercial trash and recycle bins and from City streets and alleys. Residents have complained that people wait until trash day and take valuable recyclable items out of their bins without permission, or take items not meant to be given away. The “anti-scavenging” section of the City’s Solid Waste Code was intended to prevent this as Coronado uses the funds it receives for the materials to help cover the costs of the curbside recycling program. The Solid Waste Code, however, does not expressly prohibit people from searching or removing materials from trash containers, and there is no penalty for doing so. The ordinance also is proposing language that will prohibit residents from abandoning or setting-out items for “free” pick-up, and allow police to issue an “illegal dumping” ticket to those who do. It is expected that the ordinance will help reduce the number of people who drive through the City’s streets and alleys searching for items.

Hazardous Material Collection

The City’s Household Hazardous Waste program provides Coronado residents a free, convenient and safe way to dispose products that may not be placed in the regular trash. Coronado’s program is open 46 Saturdays per year and is closed only around the seven major federal holidays. The next collection day will be Saturday, April 11. No appointments are required and there is no cost. Residents may drive into the facility, at 101 B Ave., from First Street between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to drop off their materials. Public Services collects paints, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, used oils and fuels, electronics and used needles. Last year, the program collected approximately 100,000 pounds of waste. Bicycle Markings/Street Preventive Maintenance Project

The City wants to hear from you as it begins to design this year’s Street Preventive Maintenance project. During construction, the project will fix minor potholes and damaged asphalt and place a slurry seal over the pavement surface along several streets scheduled for regular maintenance. This year, bicycle safety markings, as called out in the City’s Bicycle Master Plan, are proposed at the conclusion of the maintenance work. Learn more about the project and let the City know what you think by filling out this online questionnaire.

Scam Alert

The Police Department has been notified by residents, who have received scam telephone calls where the caller is identified as a representative of the Internal Revenue Service. The Police Department wants the community to be aware of this scam. If you receive this call, it is not the IRS. The IRS communicates its official business in writing via regular mail, not telephone calls. IRS agents will not place telephone calls asking for payment, demand a specific form of payment, or leave a message threatening legal action. If you receive one of these calls, hang up and report it to the Federal Trade Commission. If possible, also report the telephone number. Click here for more information about the scam and for a sample of a recent out-of-state scam message left last month.

Free Paper Shredding Event for Residents

Get your documents together. The City and EDCO will host a free paper-shredding event on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot next to City Hall, 1825 Strand Way. Participants are limited to two 10-by-25-by-15-inch bankers’ boxes per household. For more information, please call (619) 287-7555.

Don’t Leave Dogs in Cars

As the weather warms up, the Coronado Police Department would like to remind residents to please keep your pets safe. Do not leave them in your vehicle. Officers recently responded to a call of a pet locked in a hot vehicle. Luckily, officers found the owner and the pet was okay. However, it’s not safe to leave your pet in a car. Temperatures in the car can rise quickly, even if it’s cool outside and the windows are rolled down a bit. Last year in Coronado, officers removed a handful of pets in distress from hot vehicles. Let’s keep our pets safe. Help us spread the word.

Motor Out on Library Front Door

The Library has wide double glass doors that are manually operated or power operated by an activation button. The motor that operates one side of the double door has failed, and, unfortunately, is no longer available as a replacement. New motor replacement scenarios have gotten complicated as the underground electrical conduit that leads to it is too narrow to accept the new replacement wiring. In short, the fix is very expensive and some time off. Meanwhile, one side of the door is not mechanized. The Library has posted the door and will advise the community when there is more information to report.
