Last Monday, the Islander Boys’ Golf team played away against their rival La Jolla High School in light rain. Unfortunately, that was not the only deficit for Coronado. Freshman Easton Phillips, their lowest scorer, was out sick; regardless, the Islanders had a “very commendable performance,” says Coach Stuart Gordon. Finishing first for Coronado, freshman Jake McLaughlin shot a score of 41 strokes, followed by juniors Gino Frederick and Matt Schnappauf who each finished in 42 strokes. Junior Javier Hernandez and senior Saul Chacon finished the course in 43 and 48 strokes, respectively. La Jolla won by a only a four-stroke margin, 216-212.
To conclude their week, Coronado hosted Cathedral Catholic High School for another close match. Phillips was back on the course for the Islanders and finished the course in 39 strokes. Laughlin, consistent with Monday’s match, finished in 41 strokes, followed by Chacon and Schnappauf, both of whom finished in 43. Hernandez and junior Gino Frederick were not far behind with respective scores of 44 and 46. “Overall, a close match with several Coronado players missing really short putts that cost us this match,” comments Coach Gordon. After tallying the top five scores, Cathedral took the match by a small margin, 210-205.
The golf team currently holds a record of two wins to six losses.
