Community of Coronado,
On July 18, the City was fortunate to have the International Law Enforcement Torch Run come through our community. The law enforcement officers and Special Olympic athletes were from around the world and carried the Flame of Hope on its journey to the 2015 Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles. I want to express my thanks to the Police Department personnel who facilitated this event as well as others who participated in the ceremony at Spreckels Park. Our emcee was Olympian Layne Beaubien, who also introduced speakers; Captain Lori Luhnow (San Diego PD), Mayor Casey Tanaka and Andre Zotoff. The crowd was also graced with music provided by the Coronado Community Band.
On July 22, the City welcomed Special Olympic athletes and coaches from Argentina and Puerto Rico. The Hotel del Coronado hosted the 107 delegates and provided them with dinner, beach games and s’mores on the beach. Throughout the Host Town program, the following Coronado community members provided support: Lowes Coronado Bay Resort, Lil Piggys, Amel Esposito, Linder Kids, Supply our Students, Coronado Firefighters’ Association, Coronado Rotary Club, Jinx Ring, Todd Little, Old Town Trolley, and Crown City Photography. In addition, the Police Department Senior Volunteers and other community members provided a warm welcome to our visitors as they arrived at the Hotel del Coronado.
Thank you for the community support during these historic events. The athletes we hosted continue to brag to other athletes about the great time they had in Coronado, Chula Vista and National City.
