  • Silver Strand Fencing Project:  Construction continued this week to replace the existing dilapidated fence along the beach side of state Route 75 from the Coronado Cays Boulevard exit to the Navy’s Coastal Campus. Construction on the Silver Strand Fencing project is anticipated to be completed the week of October 29. The City and California State Parks began the second phase of the project last month. State Parks is managing the project. Phase I of the project was completed earlier this year and included removing the existing unsightly chain link fence along the beach side of SR-75 from Coronado Cays Boulevard to the northern end of the Silver Strand State Park and installing new round wood fence posts and fencing panels that matched the height of the existing fence.
  • Orange Avenue Pavement Repair:  Work to rehabilitate sections of Orange Avenue between Sixth and Adella Avenue has been delayed. The California Department of Transportation, which is handling the project, does not have an exact start date at this time. The City has been invited to attend the pre-construction meeting with the Caltrans’ contractor to discuss the project. Since the project did not commence as originally scheduled, the City is concerned that the work may impact events such as the Coronado Island Film Festival, the Thanksgiving holiday and the Holiday Parade & Open House. These concerns have been expressed to Caltrans and will be brought up again at the pre-construction meeting. Once started, work will take approximately four weeks to complete and go from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Sunday evening and ending Friday morning. Saturday closures will be from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. and Sunday closures will be from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Noise and normal construction activity impacts should be anticipated. Caltrans and the City will work to minimize any inconveniences.
  • Maximum Enforcement Day:  On Tuesday, October 10, the Traffic Division held a maximum enforcement day resulting in 41 citations, 98 parking citations, four misdemeanor arrests, two vehicles towed, three reports, and one field interview.
  • Business Certificate Programs:  The City reminds the community that it will initiate a new streamlined business certificate registration program to replace the former business license tax beginning January 1. All those conducting business in Coronado will be required to register their business with the city and pay a $26 annual fee. Affected businesses include home-based occupations, solicitors, contractors, professions and trades. Nonprofit organizations must obtain a certificate but do not have to pay the fee. Those who conduct business in Coronado but are located outside city limits must also obtain a business certificate. Businesses will be notified to renew annually. A business certificate may be obtained online or by visiting City Hall at 1825 Strand Way.

  • PAWS of Coronado Update: The Coronado Animal Care Facility is operated on a contractual basis by PAWS of Coronado, a private nonprofit group. The facility provides shelter and care for impounded, stray and relinquished animals, and provides lost and found assistance, licensing, microchipping and adoption services. The City and PAWS entered into a unique agreement in 2014 that gives the day to day operations of the Animal Care Facility to PAWS.
