City Manager’s Weekly Update – November 2, 2018

Library Mail Ballot Drop-off Location: The Coronado Public Library is an official Mail Ballot Drop-Off location for the November 6 Gubernatorial Election. San Diego County Registrar of Voters staff will be onsite during normal Library hours through November 5. On Election Day, November 6, Registrar staff will be at the Library from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. All mail ballot voters may drop off their ballot not just those from Coronado. The Coronado Public Library is a non-polling location and, as such, will not serve as a polling place on Election Day.

2018 Badge-pinning Ceremony: On Tuesday, October 30, the Fire Department hosted a badge-pinning ceremony to recognize all members receiving promotions or being hired over the past 12 months. The department celebrated four promotions and six new hires. Fire Chief Jim Lydon acknowledged the support provided to each of these members by family and friends. It was one of the largest groups in recent memory to be recognized.

Election Results/Council Reorganization: The Registrar’s Office reminds voters that while the first election results will come in shortly after 8 p.m. on November 6, up to 45 percent of the total votes cast are not included in Election night results. The Registrar explains that many of the 1.2 million ballots mailed out this election will not be received in time to verify and process them by 8 p.m. Mail ballots can be accepted up to three days after Election Day if postmarked on or before November 6. It could take up to two weeks to count all mail ballots. Additionally, the Registrar must account for provisional ballots, touchscreen ballots and damaged ballots. Write-in candidates also take time to review and tally. Updated results will be released by the Registrar daily through November 16 and as needed until the final certified results are posted on December 6. As the official results will not be in before the City’s regularly scheduled December 4 meeting, the City will not hold its reorganization meeting with newly elected officials until the regularly scheduled December 18 meeting.

Call to Local ArtistsThe City’s Cultural Arts Commission invites local Coronado artists to submit images of original artwork for the “Celebrate Local Artists” banners series. Banners will be displayed on Orange Avenue from April through June 2019. The Commission is seeking submissions from a broad range of media, styles and genres of local artists. All artwork selected will be juried and artists who are selected will be notified by early March 2019. Fifteen new artists will be selected to participate in the display. Artists who participated in the 2018 display will not be eligible to apply this year. Artists must be 18 or older.
