Submitted by Coronado’s Street Tree Committee
On behalf of the City of Coronado and Coronado Street Tree Committee, we would like to thank the many volunteers who came out on a cool, wet Saturday morning [March 17] to help plant trees around the city. 33 trees were planted in the right of way between sidewalk and street. Locations were selected based on available space and homeowners’ agreement to regularly water them.
This annual Arbor Day event would not be possible without the homeowners’ cooperation and volunteers who this year included residents, sailors from Naval Base Coronado, and students with parents and teachers from Oak Park Elementary School. A big thanks to Starbucks on Orange Ave for the donation of coffee which was very much appreciated by all of us as the rain came down. Behind the scenes, city staff did all of the event planning and will monitor the trees. Shannon Player, long-time member of the Committee, graciously agreed to demonstrate proper planting technique to all of the volunteers.
We remind all those who received street trees to water them regularly and deeply so that they grow a deep root system. With summer weather approaching, it is very important to water your trees to get them through the warmest part of the year. We thank everyone in Coronado for your stewardship in helping us keep Coronado green for future generations. Your efforts have helped us retain the title of a Tree City USA for over 30 years.
